Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the ability to contest particular decisions made by the chair umpire, following the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
